教宗真福庇護九世於1870年宣稱聖若瑟為「普世教會的主保」，教宗方濟各在今年，即150紀念的時候頒布宗座牧函《PATRIS CORDE》（帶有父親的心），並宣布由2020年12月8日至2021年12月8日為「聖若瑟年」（Year of St. Joseph)。
教宗在牧函中提到特別在疫情下，有很多普通人例如醫生、護士、清潔工、超級市場職員、照顧者等，在日常生活中為人付出耐心及締造希望，好像聖若瑟提醒我們，即使身處隱蔽或暗處中，但都可以在救恩史中有非常重要的角色。
教宗亦於牧函中邀請大家一起祈禱： Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.
